Couples Counselling

When your relationship doesn't feel the way it used to

Perhaps you've noticed that conversations seem to turn into arguments, or you've stopped talking about the things that really matter because it feels easier to keep the peace. You might feel as though you're having the same disagreements over and over again, with neither of you feeling truly heard or understood.

Sometimes it's not about arguing at all. You may have gradually drifted apart, lost some of the closeness you once shared, or found yourselves so caught up in everyday life that there's little time left for each other.

For some couples, there may have been an affair or a betrayal of trust that has left you questioning everything you thought you knew about your relationship. You may be struggling with feelings of hurt, anger, guilt or uncertainty about whether things can ever feel the same again.

Whatever has brought you to this point, you may still care deeply about one another but feel unsure about how to move forward.

Understanding what's happening between you

When relationships become difficult, it's not always about the things you're arguing over. Sometimes there are feelings underneath, perhaps of being rejected, unimportant, criticised or simply not understood.

We all bring our own experiences into relationships, including what we've learned about love, trust, closeness and how we respond when things become difficult. These experiences can influence how we communicate with our partner, often without us even realising it.

In our sessions, we'll take time to explore what's happening between you, including the patterns you may have found yourselves caught up in and what each of you might be feeling or needing.

My role isn't to decide who's right or wrong, but to help you both feel heard, while also gently challenging patterns that may be causing hurt or distance. Together, we can explore different ways of communicating, managing disagreements and understanding one another, with honesty, respect and emotional safety at the centre of our work.

Finding your way forward

You may be struggling with communication, feeling disconnected, experiencing difficulties with intimacy, or finding that the pressures and changes in everyday life have affected your relationship. Perhaps you're unsure whether you want the same things anymore, or what the future might look like together.

Whatever has brought you to counselling, you don't need to have all the answers or even agree about what needs to change.

Couples counselling is about giving you both the opportunity to understand your relationship more deeply, explore what each of you wants and needs, and consider how you might move forward.

If you're thinking about couples counselling, you're welcome to get in touch for an initial conversation about how we might work together.

Couples Counselling Sessions

What to expect from couples counselling

Our first appointment is 90 minutes, giving us time to talk about what has brought you to counselling and hear from both of you about the difficulties you may be experiencing. It also gives me an opportunity to begin understanding the issues within your relationship, how they may be affecting you both and how I might best support you in our work together.

Following this, I arrange an individual session with each partner. This gives you both an opportunity to talk about your own experiences and anything that may be influencing how you experience your relationship today.

We then come back together for our next couples session (which are generally 60 minutes, though some couples choose to continue with 90 minute sessions) and begin to explore what we've started to understand about your relationship and consider how we might move forward.
